Get Gothic MP

Gothic MP has no commercial code-signing certificate - one costs a few hundred euros a year, which a non-profit project cannot justify. Windows SmartScreen and Defender mark unsigned programs as “unknown” and warn about them until the file builds up enough download reputation.

The second reason is the nature of the mod itself: the launcher has to hook into the Gothic 1 Remake process to add networking code to the game. Some viruses use similar techniques, so antivirus heuristics can be overzealous and raise a false positive.

This is completely normal for fan-made mods - it has affected practically every community launcher for years. Download the launcher only from this site, and if SmartScreen blocks it, click “More info” → “Run anyway” or add an exception in Defender. If in doubt, ask us on Discord.
